ABOUT

ABOUT THE THERAPIST

Kim Kriks, LCSW, is the founder and clinical therapist at Hopeful Humans Counseling. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Applied Behavioral Science from University of Kansas, and went on to receive her Master of Social Work degree and Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsement from University of Illinois Chicago.

Kim specializes in counseling young children under age 10, supporting adolescents, and guiding parents through the challenges of family life. Her clinical experience includes training in DIR/Floortime, and she is currently pursuing her credential as a Registered Play Therapist. She has also completed specialized training in women’s issues and perinatal mental health.

Before founding Hopeful Humans Counseling, Kim spent six years serving as both Clinical Director and therapist at a private practice with locations in Downers Grove and New Lenox, Illinois. In addition, she brings more than a decade of experience as a school social worker, supporting children of all ages, including those in early childhood and early intervention programs.

Kim’s therapeutic approach is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Systems Theory. She believes families are the experts on their own lives and works collaboratively with clients to provide compassionate guidance, practical strategies, and meaningful support during difficult seasons.

Outside of her work as a therapist, Kim enjoys canoe camping in the Boundary Waters and spending time with her husband and son, often biking together to local farmers markets.

TYPES OF THERAPY

CHILDREN

Child therapy is a specialized form of counseling designed to support children through the emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges that can arise during childhood. Typically serving children ages 5–10, therapy helps children better understand their feelings, build healthy coping skills, improve behavior, and strengthen relationships at home, at school, and in everyday life.

Sessions are tailored to each child’s unique needs and may incorporate play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies, behavior modification, and other evidence-based approaches. Through a safe, supportive, and engaging environment, children are encouraged to express themselves, develop confidence, and learn skills that foster long-term emotional well-being.

Because parents and caregivers play an essential role in a child’s growth and success, family involvement is encouraged throughout the therapeutic process to help reinforce progress and support positive change outside of sessions.

PARENT SUPPORT

Parent support services are designed to help caregivers navigate the everyday challenges of parenting with greater confidence, understanding, and support. This type of counseling provides parents with practical tools, guidance, education, and emotional support to strengthen family relationships and better manage the demands of parenting at every stage.

Parent support may be especially beneficial for new parents, families with young children under age 5, and parents of adolescents. Services are tailored to each family’s unique needs and may include talk therapy, behavior intervention planning, school advocacy and support for 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), sleep planning, potty training support, guidance around screen dependence, and more.

The goal of parent support is to empower caregivers with effective strategies, reduce stress, and foster healthier, more connected family dynamics.

ADOLESCENTS/TEENS

Adolescent therapy provides teens with a supportive space to explore emotions, navigate social and academic challenges, manage stress, identify personal obstacles, and adjust to life’s transitions and changes. Therapy can help adolescents build confidence, strengthen coping skills, and develop healthier ways to communicate and connect with others.

Areas of specialization include ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, support for gifted individuals, and affirming care for the LGBTQ+ community. Treatment approaches are tailored to each teen’s unique needs and may include talk therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies, strengths-based approaches, and skill-building interventions designed to promote emotional well-being and resilience.

WOMEN'S COUNSELING

Women’s counseling is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on the unique experiences, challenges, and life transitions women may face. It offers a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space to explore concerns related to relationships, fertility, pregnancy and motherhood, self-esteem, body image, career stress, identity, trauma, and mental health.

The goal of women’s counseling is to foster self-awareness, build resilience, encourage self-acceptance, and empower women to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and support. Therapy is tailored to each individual’s needs and may incorporate a variety of evidence-based approaches to promote healing, personal growth, and overall emotional well-being.
